Spiritual Guide Which Disentangles the Soul - Michael de Molinos - 1st Book - Chapter 4

In periods of dryness, continue to pray, and don't be hard on yourself.

Two types of prayer: tender, delightful, amicable, full of sentiments; obscure, dry, desolate, tempted, darksome.

The first is to gain souls; the second to purify them.
The first is to attract (he uses 'addict') to spiritual life.
The second is to conquer passions and obtain perfection.

The rational for embracing dryness is that it covers up (Veil of Dryness) how God is working in us, (maybe camouflages is a better word). IF we felt that we knew what God was doing in us, it would lead to self-satisfaction, and our 'undoing'.

All sensibilities (sic) should first be removed. This statement is difficult for me, especially because I'm not sure if it is synonymous with the senses and physical passions, or felt knowledge. Likely the latter. Need to work on the linguistics of that word.

The apparent lack of progress that dryness suggestions is 'a cheat'.

The fruits of the dryness include:

Perseverance in prayer.
Loathing of things of the World, followed by new ways of serving God.
An advertency in the Heart which restrains you from committing evil, or speaking, revenging your self.
Exceeding affliction whenever a light fault is committed.
A desire to suffer, and do the will of God.
An inclination to Virtue.
A high esteem of God.
A sense of Peace, love of Humility, confidence in God
